Vintage time and production in Italy

2013 harvest: it is foreseen about a 42 million hectoliters production, an increase of about 3% compared to 2012.

It provides good quality Italian wines. This year the production of white wines should slightly exceed that of the reds.

This year the time of harvest is back to normal due weather conditions with not too hot temperatures good for grapes maturation. October is the month for red grapes Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Nebbiolo, November for Aglianico and Nebbiolo.

Production: more than 40% to 331 wines with denomination of origin (DOC) and to 59 wines with denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin (DOCG), 30 % to 118 wines to IGT (IGT) all recognized in Italy and the remaining 30 % to table wines. The production of white wines this year should slightly exceed that of the reds.

 

With the start of the harvest in Italy activates an economic engine that generates over $ 9 billion in revenue just from the sale of wine and that it employs 1.2 million people. The harvest in 2013 will involve 650 thousand hectares of vineyards and over 250 thousand wineries.

Italy is the second largest producer of wine after France where production is estimated at 46 million hectoliters (11% increase compared to last year). In third place among the producing countries, Spain followed by the United States and China that is growing even in consumption.
